30 Day Book Challenge – #1 Favourite Book

After completing the Book Q&A the other day, I decided to attempt to complete the 30 Day Book Challenge. That means that for the next twenty-nine days I will be writing blogs about books that fit into the 30 Day Book Challenge criteria (see below.)

The first book on the list is ‘your favourite book.’ I always find it difficult to narrow it down to one favourite book, but when I have to I always seem to fall back on ‘Rebecca’ by Daphne du Maurier. The story is about an unnamed narrator who, when working as a companion for a rich American woman, meets the wealthy Maximilian (Maxim) de Winter. After a brief courtship, the couple marry and return to Maxim’s estate, Manderly. The narrator is Maxim’s second wife. His first, Rebecca had died in a boating accident, but all of the members of the household, particularly the housekeeper, Mrs Danvers, appear to have worshipped the seemingly perfect Rebecca. The narrator soon becomes concerned that Maxim is beginning to regret marrying her, and is still in love with his angelic first wife. Ultimately, an unexpected confession is made that shocks the narrator and the reader.

This is my Mum’s favourite book, which is the reason that I first read it and watched the film (which is also very good!) When I first read it I wasn’t sure what to expect as I didn’t know anything about the plot. Initially, I found it slightly tedious, as the courtship seems dragged out, but once you enter Manderly, it quickly becomes obvious that everything is not at all as it seems! This is a brilliantly constructed crime novel that even verges on horror, with its Gothic characters. Once you really get into the plot you won’t be able to put the book down!
